  4. We hope you will like PENDULUM, and if you do, we hope you will purchase
  5. your very own, (cheap) registered copy. When you do, you will get the latest
  6. version of the program, and a printed manual containing much additional 
  7. information and an INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE. Your name will be added to our 
  8. mailing list, and you will receive notices about upgrades and about other 
  9. educational programs which we plan to develop. Using your registered copy you 
  10. will avoid delays in starting the program and you will no longer be shown the 
  11. initial screens, which encourage unregistered users to buy the program. After
  12. you receive your registered copy you will have access to our free technical
  13. support for a period of six months. This support will be provided by mail
  14. or through Compuserve.

  16. With this program we introduce a novel approach to shareware distribution.
  17. As with all shareware, we encourage you to make copies and to distribute the 
  18. program as widely as you like. The novel features of our system are the 
  19. following:

  21. 1)   You can duplicate and distribute registered or unregistered copies.
  22.      Any copy you make of your registered program will, also be registered 
  23.      for your computer but it change to "unregistered",when run on a different
  24.      computer. 
  25.  
  26. 2)   When you run an unregistered copy more than once, you will be offered
  27.      ordering information. This information will contain a code for your 
  28.      computer, and we will use this code to produce your registered copy.
  29.  
  30. 3)   The Pendulum program uses several text files and it also comes with
  31.      an INSTALL program, with this "README" file, and with some additional
  32.      auxiliary files. To ensure that only complete and unadulterated copies
  33.      are distributed, we require that all these files be present in their
  34.      original form, for the program to run for the first time on any computer.
  35.      For subsequent runs this requirement is relaxed, to let you edit some
  36.      of the "help" files in accordance to your taste, or the needs of your
  37.      students. You should keep one unmodified copy of the original disk, if
  38.      you want to distribute the program for use on other computers.

  41. When you receive the disk registered for your computer, be sure not to 
  42. run it on a different computer  (at least not before making a copy), 
  43. or you will loose your registration.

  45. To run the program simply put the floppy disk in the disk drive, close the
  46. door, type a: (assuming that "a" is your floppy drive; or else type b: ) and
  47. press the "enter" key. (At this point you have, most probably, done all this
  48. already, since you are obviously reading this message). Then, at the DOS 
  49. prompt type PENDULUM and press the "enter" key.

  51. You can also install the program in any directory of a hard- or floppy-disk
  52. by copying all the files to that directory or by running the INSTALL
  53. program. INSTALL can also be used for making copies, and will ensure that
  54. all the necessary files are present and in good order. (Remember that all the 
  55. files must be the original versions, for the program to initially run on a 
  56. different computer).

  58. Command line options are sometimes useful when running PENDULUM. For example 
  59. type  PENDULUM L3B  and press "enter" if you want to use a laser printer (L)
  60. which is connected to the parallel port 3 and in addition you want to enforce
  61. "black and white" (B) or monochrome display. These choices are retained for
  62. future runs until you enter another command line option. The defaults are 
  63. LPT1, dot-matrix, and color. Use (D) for dot-matrix and (C) for color.
